Events                                      2010 Wings Miniature Aircraft Society Events

The modelers and guests of Wings Miniature Aircraft Society, Lubbock, TX welcome you to share our passion for military model aviation and are invited to attend our radio controlled model air show!

Many of the aircraft in West Texas Warbirds are built from scratch or plans, or may be assembled from kits that are largely pre-fabricated.  Often, modelers devote hundreds of hours to researching, engineering and constructing their model aircraft subjects before they are ready to fly.  We have those in our hobby that love the building more than flying, the flying more than building, and those that are enamored with both.

As far as flying skills, most all of the pilots flying these scale military aircraft examples are at least of intermediate skill level with several years of experience.  Some are advanced to expert radio controlled fliers with more than 20 years experience.  A watchful eye can spot the solid skills of the more seasoned pilots.

The flying site in Abernathy is just a short drive North of Lubbock on Interstate 27.  It is located just four miles East of I-27 on FM 2060 (Exit 21) at the Abernathy Municipal Airport.  Watch for signs guiding you to the spectator and parking area.  Admission is $5.00 for adults, while kids 12 and under are free.  Any scouts in uniform will also be admitted free of charge.

You can expect close viewing of the model aircraft and a full unobstructed view of the flying demonstrations.  Portable restroom facilities will be available as well as food, drinks and other refreshments.  It is recommended that spectators bring their own lawn chairs and sunscreen.  Nostalgic era music, pilot interviews and expert narration of the aircraft in flight add interest and enjoyment to the event theme.  Please understand this event is highly dependent on fair weather without stiff winds, in which flying activity may be limited.

The highlight for spectators will be at noon on Saturday, August 7th, when the flying will stop and all the modelers line up the aircraft for viewing.  The participation of the crowd is next, allowing closer inspection of the aircraft and consideration for the coveted "People's Choice Award."  Ballots will be provided for all to submit their vote for their favorite military model aircraft of the air show.

West Texas Warbirds is a super event for families of school aged children, scouting and senior groups and will spark the interest of many.  Make plans to attend and we hope you have a great time!

The members of the Wings Miniature Aircraft Society of Lubbock, Texas present their 3rd annual radio controlled warbird event.  This year’s event, West Texas Warbirds, promises to be better than ever, adding an additional day for flying activities.  A $20.00 landing fee will cover all event days.

The return of this event, held August 6 - 8, 2010, welcomes all R/C military model aircraft in campaign colors and markings.  From electric park flyers, ducted fans, glow and gas fueled aircraft, to turbine (with waivers) and multi-engine aircraft, all military fixed-wing radio controlled model aircraft are welcome.  West Texas Warbirds is an AMA sanctioned, non-competitive, (Class C) event.  West Texas Warbirds will recognize three special model aircraft and award beautiful custom trophies for "Pilot's Choice", "People's Choice" and "Best Scale Flight."  The 2009 event drew pilots that came from all over Texas
, as well as New Mexico and Oklahoma
.

Today, warbird events are very common throughout the country.  Some are serious scale competitions, while others are very relaxed with loose interpretations of actual military aircraft.  This event is intended to be somewhere in the middle, with emphasis on having fun.  As a general guideline, participation with any model of an actual full-scale aircraft in a military color scheme will be acceptable.  Aircraft falling under the category of AMA Fun Scale eligible are perfect.  Please understand this means no Ugly Sticks with Maltese crosses (not a model of an actual aircraft) or Miss America P-51s (military aircraft out of uniform).  We'd love to host you scale competition modelers as well!

If you are new to the Abernathy Aerodrome site, you're in for a real treat!  This site is quickly becoming a great facility, showcasing the spacious 75' X 1300+' runway.  If you are flying 2.4 GHz frequency, you do not need to impound your transmitter.  All 72MHz radios must be impounded when not in use.  Shaded covers have not yet been installed, so please feel free to bring your portable pop-up canopy tents for grass setup.  Overnight primitive camping on site is permitted for motor homes and campers trailers (no hook-ups).  Food, drinks and portable restroom facilities should also be available onsite and in nearby Abernathy.

For anyone coming in from out of town without camping amenities, the city of Lubbock is just twenty minutes south of the flying area with plenty of lodging, restaurants and evening entertainment.  The official West Texas Warbirds event hotel is the Quality Inn at 5706 Interstate 27, in Lubbock.  Give them a call at (806) 749-1090.  A special room rate of $64.99 will be reserved for West Texas Warbird guests until July 31st.

The West Texas Warbird event promises to be a lot of fun, so make plans now to attend!
