The club Field Improvement Day in March of 2009 was a great success! We've come a long way from "flying in the weeds"! Look for additional photos and updates to this photo album to diary our progress and field transformations. It's looking great so keep it up guys!
Wings Rules at Abernathy Municipal Airport
The basic rules for R/C model aircraft set forth by the Academy of Model Aeronautics will be in effect at all times. These rules are open to review and are published annually by the AMA. Click here for a link to these rules.
Since this is an actual active full-scale airport facility, some additional rules apply:
1) Full-scale aircraft ALWAYS have the right of way.
2) There must be a specified spotter for every pilot. One person may serve as spotter for multiple pilots. The spotter has the responsibility for monitoring a radio that receives frequency 122.90. The spotter informs the pilot(s) of full-scale aircraft traffic.
3) No R/C aircraft is permitted to take off when the approach of a full-scale aircraft has been announced.
4) If in the air when the approach of a full-scale aircraft is announced, the R/C pilot may make one pass for a gear check and then turn immediately on final approach and land. The R/C pilot has to be able to make this flight plan alteration within not more than 60 seconds.
5) Demonstration of this requirement may be required by the field safety officer(s).
6) If there is not sufficient notice, such as a full-scale aircraft that does not follow the published pattern for landing, the R/C pilot will proceed to the upwind end of the runway and establish a circular holding pattern until the full-scale aircraft has cleared the runway.
7) If the R/C pilot lacks the experience to perform either of these maneuvers, the spotter must be someone capable of either directing the pilot or, taking control of the aircraft and performing these maneuvers in a safe manner.
8) Normal hours of R/C activity will be from dawn until dusk. Morning activity may be altered out of consideration for those who live nearby.
9) To fly at Abernathy Municipal Airport, every R/C pilot must be a member in good standing of both the AMA and Wings Miniature Aircraft Society or a guest of a present active member. Contest or event directors will be responsible for making appropriate determinations concerning membership. Student pilots and guests under the direct supervision of a qualified member may be granted a temporary exemption.
10) Every pilot and spotter must be trained in the safety procedures.
